Bob Johnson & Petra Flaa | Founders

In 2006 Bob Johnson & Petra Flaa were drawn by a parcel of land for sale in Creston, their great love of wine made it impossible not to seize the opportunity to start their own winery in the unique micro-climate that the Creston Valley offers. Thus the Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery was born.

Bob & Petra have created an amazing winery on a beautiful property. In 2021 they decided to take a step back and sold the winery to their son Wes and his wife Myran.

Wes Johnson | Winemaker & Owner

After 2 years of calculus and arts studies at University of Alberta Wes’s interest took a turn towards winemaking when his parents Bob & Petra were setting up the Bailie-Grohman Winery in Creston. After working a harvest together with a kiwi winemaker, Wes decided to travel to New Zealand to complete his oenology degree at EIT in Hawkes Bay.

He returned home in 2014 to join his family winery in Creston and took over as winemaker in 2016.

“I’m proud to be part of the adventure that is putting Baillie-Grohman, Creston, and the Kootenays on the world wine map.”

Wes is passionate about making expressive, elegant, handcrafted wines and is ready to make his mark in the BC wine industry.

Myran Hagenfeldt | Managing Director & Owner

Born and raised in Sweden, Myran found herself moving to New Zealand in 2005 and started working in the wine industry. She held a role as General Manager at Maude Wines in Central Otago.

In 2018, Wes joined Maude Wines for harvest and in 2019 Myran made the move to Canada to join him at his family winery.

With a business degree under her belt and 15 years of experience in the wine industry she says “It’s an exciting step for us to build on the legacy that Bob and Petra have created and to play an integral part in putting this emerging wine-growing region, the Kootenays, on the map.”

  • Tasting Room Staff

These are the lovely people who tell you our story when you come to visit! We haven’t managed to get them all together for a photo as of yet but they are a great team who’s focus is to look after you, making sure you have a great time here at the winery.

  • Luna

Luna joined the team in 2021 and is our official winery dog. She is an English Sheppard and a committed staff member. Luna takes her role very seriously and is a highly trained ‘snoopervisor’.

Last summer, Luna trained hard to achieve a Puppy Masters degree in following Wes into the vineyards to ensure he is doing his job sufficiently. She is also a keen assessor of your patting skills, so please give her a stroke if you see her.

When Luna is not working hard at the winery, she enjoys bouncing around with other dogs, napping in the shade of the vines and chewing anything that squeaks!

Vineyards

Our 16acre Baillie-Grohman Vineyard was planted by Petra Flaa in 2007. This is the property where the winery is located.

Across the road we manage 6 acres of the Creston Valley Vineyards, Gew, CH PG, Shoenburger. Planted in 2005

The St Augustine Vineyard in the new kid on the block, planted in 2020. We have Pinot Noir 115, 667 & 777 & Chardonnay./ Together with a new variety for the Creston valley, Cabernet Franc. Look out for this wine coming into the portfolio in the next couple of years.

The soil structure of our vineyard varies from sandy and loamy clay to heavy soil mineralized with calcium and potassium. Mixed in are small to large granite pebbles, rock and boulders.

 History

Our winery proudly honours the name and spirit of one of the region’s most legendary pioneers, William Baillie-Grohman, who had an adventurous nature and love of the wilderness. Relocating to the area in 1890, Baillie-Grohman had a vision that the area along the Creston Valley Flats could be converted into rich farmland
